The osu!catch difficulty naming are fun (I love Yuzu's new design and thought this was a cute idea for a drawing)

    osu! as a psychological game

    Posted: 21 Mar 2020 01:25 PM PDT

I've been playing osu! for quite some time now, and in the past year or so I've been getting very close to breaking the top 1000 global rank threshold. As a result, most high pp plays I've been close to fc'ing have been choked due to nerves. I will be in the middle of a play, and I'll tell myself "this is the play. Once I beat this map, I'll have completed my osu! goal." which leads me to shake too much to the point of me breaking combo. This pattern of constantly choking top plays has also led me to rage quit more often than ever, and overall osu! seemed more like a chore than a game, which is what it's supposed to be.

That was until I discovered how much my psychological well-being impacted my osu! performance.

I started listing what keeps me from fc'ing maps, and I came up with this list:

    • mindlocked on maps
    • nerves
    • shitmissing at easy parts
    • ragequitting early on in osu! sessions

First of all, mindlock. While I don't necessarily have a "cure" for it, it is a 100% psychological phenomenon. It's when your brain gets so used to hitting the same pattern over and over again, it relies on muscle memory to hit the pattern. The problem is that our muscle memory is nowhere near accurate enough for osu!'s tight patterns, so it leads us to miss over and over again. If you take a break from playing the map, try not to rage too much when missing the same note over and over again, and stop yourself from telling yourself it's a physical problem and that you're not good enough to hit the pattern, you should be able to hit it.

Nerves is one thing I've started to tackle over the last month, and it all stems from me starting to play with confidence. Instead of telling myself "I don't want to miss, I don't want to miss" when I get past the hard part of a map, I tell myself "I can do this. I have the skill to beat this map". It's helped me significantly and I've gotten quite a few top plays with that mentality.

Next is shitmissing. The psychology behind this feature is very similar to the previous two. It involves not demotivating yourself but motivating yourself. If you miss at an easy part, that's fine. There will always be another attempt after your current one and you will get back to that part that you missed at.

Finally, one thing that's been holding me back is general negativity when playing osu!. It's not uncommon for players to rage when choking a map or missing at the same spot dozens of times in a row, and as a result they turn off the game for the day. If you replace that negativity with positivity and find anything to be positive about, you will start to do better. Even if it's something silly like "well at least I got better accuracy that time", literally anything to feel positive about, missing won't feel like as much of a hassle. As well as that, tell yourself that missing doesn't matter. There will always be an infinite amount of attempts after your current one, so even if you miss you'll be able to have another try at that pattern later on. Developing this mentality will hopefully prevent you from rage-quitting in the future; at least it helped me.

To conclude, I don't want this message to come off as an easy way to cure nerves, mindlock, etc. It takes a lot of practice to replace rage with positivity--trust me, I would know. I've broken 2 keyboards and my current tablet pen due to rage, so if anyone is familiar with rage, it would be me. This mentality switch is more of a long term solution rather than a short-term one, so you won't fc a ridiculously hard map because of thinking positively after a day. It takes practice.

And for all the smartasses that are going to comment "if i think positively i'll be able to fc freedom dive hdhr thanks for the post" obviously physical skill is a huge part of osu!, if not the biggest part. All I'm trying to say is that mentality also plays a huge role into how well someone can perform in osu!.

tl;dr: replacing your negative mindset with a positive one will allow you to achieve some osu! goals you felt too demotivated to try achieving. It might not be the next day, but it will help in due time.

Hello there. For context the internet in my city was down for about 2 hours while I played Osu! . In that time I Fc a map but It would not submit the new score to Osu! ( since 2 days). Is there a fix?
