I made an osu!mania fan game that uses osu! beatmaps during the Global Game Jam (48 hours) Posted: 03 Feb 2020 11:52 AM PST Hey osu! community! I just wanted to share the project I did over the weekend with a couple friends. We had 48 hours to develop a new game from scratch. The theme of the game jam was "Repair" but we couldn't figure out a good game idea for it so we just made this random rhythm game. kekw We are dubbing this game as "osu!vesta". Vesta comes from a different IP that my team is working on where we plan to pull story influences from. So what is this game about? osu!vesta is a deck-building rhythm game. The player builds a deck of cards that will be used to deal damage to the enemy, heal yourself, or other special effects. The beatmap of the song is generated during runtime, using the timing points of osu! beatmaps, and the lane sequence of the current top card. There are 7 lanes similar to osu!mania 7K. The game is meant to be played like an RPG similar to Slay the Spire. The player would start out with a small deck of cards, and obtain more cards during their adventure. Using better cards require more skill because the lane sequence will be harder (either because of longer sequence length, or by the inclusion of notes being dropped in multiple lanes at once). Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to implement the adventure features during the event. Whenever the enemy's health lowers to 0, they become "Broken". During this time, you get 10x damage score while the enemy recovers back to full health. We decided that the song shouldn't end just because an enemy is dead, so we choose this design as an alternative. Clearing a stage requires the player to stay above 0 health, and to break the enemy at least once during the song. Whenever you miss a note, the enemy's attack meter increases. Whenever their attack meter reaches the maximum, they will use their next card. (We only have it dealing a set amount of damage for now, but the design called for the enemies having their own decks too) Examples: If the current top card is "Fireball" which has a lane sequence of (1,2,3,4), and if your whole deck is made of Fireball cards, then the beatmap (when played) would look something like this. Note that the actual design calls for a minimum deck size of 4 unique cards, so that the beatmap is not this repetitive. The other three cards we had time to make during the game jam are: Fireball (Deal 50 damage) (1,2,3,4) Fireblast (Deal 70 damage) (7,6,5,4) Healing Warmth (Heal 120 health) (1,7,2,6) Here is a video of a full run of Parousia with all three of these cards: Other notes: - Activating cards require at least 60% accuracy in that card's note sequence. - We initially wanted this game to be for mobile devices, but we found that it was a lot more fun on PC. - Although it can use any osu! beatmap, osu!mania maps work better. - We are probably going to stop development on this for a while as we work on another project.
