Ultimate Guide - Tap X Players

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 12:45 PM PST

I've very passionate about the playstyle Tap X Alt. And do know Dokidokilolixx made and post about this. But this post goes into further detail about every playstyle. So I wanted to make a post about it. My Experience, it's up sides and down sides. And a Full guide on how to play it and improve in each one individually with Tips and Tricks.

A Little about me in the playstyle is I've been playing Tap X. For about 3 years and Tap X is a Insanely difficult playstyle late game. The playstyles with Tap X is majority of them. Including playing a new variation as my secondary playstyle which I use for fun or for show. I've become proficent in all of them as my main playstyle plays big roles in almost all of Tap X. Variations. To name the ones I have played.

    ♦ Tobe ♦ Reverse Tobe ♦Tap Z X
♦ Tap X Alt. (Primarily use this one) ♦ (Tap [X Alt) Z] (Secondary Playstyle, the new variation)

(Tap [X Alt) Z], Is Tap X Alt. All Jumps and to Z X Alt Streams. It's purpose to Remove Shakiness from doing Streams. Also adds a extra little fun/difficulty to the already immensely difficult playstyle Tap X Alt.

VVVVVVVVVVVVVFollowing Spoiler Text is a short story of my experiences and plays with Tap X. VVVVVVVVVVV

I've been playing osu! for a total of 4 Years now 3.5 Years I've been playing the Game Offline. If I had to Guess I Probably have a playcount around 200,000 in that short amount of time. (Basically only game I've been playing because of my Goals with the game and only thing I do in my free time.)

I Started out as a K1 K2 Player using a Tablet that I hold stolen from my Younger Sister. I played it for about 1.5 Years and in the last half year of that I was also playing 'Tobe and Tap Z X. After that half year I made the full change to 'Tobe' Giving up on Tap Z X and Playing K1 K2 Entirely. For the Next Year I made the same exact Mistake Doki had made, not knowing who Doki was or even offical name of my playstyle. For Those who do not know what Doki's mistake was. He started out playing high BPMS and Mashing Streams. Not learning how to control the playstyle, which is also the same mistake I made. Now For the Last 2 Years I 've picked up playing Tap X Alt. after Watching Oxycodone/ yamemasita Replays on YouTube. Took me about 3 Week's to start playing it comfortably. Leaving and coming back to it every so often and began Improving in my opinion after those 3 weeks, very quickly. For those Previous two Years of Playing Tap X And K1 K2. The highest thing I had FC'd was just above 5*s. And Now I can Pass occassionally some 9* 10* Maps Just Like Doki or Emilia can (Very Close also FC'ing a 9.6* REFLEC BEAT limelight (dj TAKA) - Quaver [Ultimate Crescendo] 8xMiss Play is on my YouTube along with the plays listed below). Tap X Alt. Was The playstyle I needed to improve again. And In these Last 2 Years, I saw a Player named Moffo who kinda inspired me. So I gave Their playstyle a chance and turned out to do pretty good at. Which I now know as Reverse Tobe.

My Favourite plays I've accomplished playing Tap X Alt.

    Omoi - Snow Drive (01.23) [Rumi's Expert] w/ DT 10x Miss 86.62% (3/17/2019)

    Kobaryo feat. kyou1110 - Attention Whore Magic [Solitude] 18xMiss 86.74% (11/9/2019)

My Biggest goal in osu! is to pass Oxycodones Peak Rank as a Tap X Alt Player. Which may seem pretty far-fetched but I'm still going to try as soon as I get back from the Service.

    Terminology:

KPS; Keys Per Second Ex; Example K2/K1; Key 2/Key 1
M2/M1; Mouse 2/Mouse 1 X/Z; Commonly referred to K2 and K1 APS; Aim Per Second
Tobe; Using your Pen to tap Jumps. And your Pen and K2, to Stream. (DokiDokiLolixx) Reverse Tobe; Using K2 To Hit Jumps and your Pen and K2 to Hit Streams (Moffo) Tap Z X; Using your Pen to tap Jumps, and K1 and K2 to Stream. (Emilia)
Reverse Azuki; Using K1 K2 to Hit Jumps, and Tap and K2 to hit Streams. (Mayoler) Tap X Alt (lesjuh) ; Alternating Tap and K2 on both Streams and Jumps. (Oxycodone/Yamemasita) (Tap [X Alt) Z]; Tap K2 Alt Jumps, K1 K2 Alt Streams. (SpeedrunsSin)

♦♦♦ It is also note worthy to mention, I will be following the playstyles to a Tee. And it will not be a hybrid of that variant in anyway (Exception of Tips and Tricks). A Great example is Emilia. Emilia does not tap All Jumps. If they are very fast,Emilia will hit the note using K2 or X in order to hit the given notes efficently and effectively. ♦♦♦

    Getting into Tap X:

    Adjusting your Tablet Area

For Adjusting your tablet area. I reccommend one that allows you reach all four corners with some strain to the difficult to reach ones.

    • Right handed, it will but the bottom right hand corner and your top left hand corner.

    • Left Handed, It will be the bottom left hand corner and your top right hand corner.

This way, your Area is still big enough that when you tap you minimize the amount of shake when Streaming or doing Tech Maps. While Still being able to aim effectively.

Area will vary, depending on the grip you use to hold your pen and Aim. Just be sure try and minimize your shake as much as possible while still being able to play effectively. It may take a couple of attempts to find that right area that suits you for Tap X.

    Grip

I will have to say I STRONGLY reccommend have some sort of grip tape for your pen. It is a common issue with Tap X Player that their hands will slowly slide down there Pen with Each Tap They make.

What I use is a Gauze-like Material that's sticky, along with Rubber band near where my hands rests when holding the Pen. Giving it a Thick Ring to ensure my Hand does NOT move or change position while holding my pen.

    Accuracy

I'm including this because I know a lot of people say that they have difficulty with Accuracy using Tap X. But I see this as a Player Error and not the playstyle itself. Nothing about the playstyles impedes your rhythm. Everything happens the moment you do it. You can have good Accuracy with this all the time. It just takes Time and Practice.

Ex: Haga1115 is an Example as their Accuracy is outstanding while using Click X Alt. (Same as Tap X Alt, but with a mouse instead.) And achieveing Many Rank #1's on the leaderboards.

    Pens Nib

Yes Your Pens Nib. Use a Pen that has Minimal movement on the Nib. You want the Nib to feel like it's the press of a button. I STRONGLY RECCOMMEND NOT USING A PEN WITH A LONG NIB it generally has Thousands of Different Pressure levels, and on these pens you will find yourself Pressing slightly harder like you were trying to sticky button. It will throw off your Timing, it does feel like it takes more stamina. And you are more likely to go through your pens Nib faster and have it more likely to break with the Rapid amount of pressure you will be putting on it.

Tap X Alt ( lesjuh ) Pro and Con:

    Pro Con
♦ Snappy Aim ♦ Flow Aim (Tech; Streams)
♦ Bursts are easy ♦ Spaced Streams or Long Streams are Difficult (Including Tech)
Can play VERY high BPMs ♦ Very Difficult to Learn**
    ♦ Control

    Snappy Aim

Any of the Tap X Playstyle that deal with Tapping with the pen will result in Snappy Aim. This is in all Tap X Playstyles. As your hand slows down to Tap, and as it rises again in picks up in-speed.

(Yes this is really what happens with tapping Streams and Jumps.)

    Bursts are easy

Because of the use of both your hands for Rhythm it can result in sudden bursts of Speed in quick rapid succession.

    Can play VERY high BPMs

With Tap X Alt, your speed is the highest BPM your weakest hand can tap.

Ex: Say The fastest your weakest hand can tap is 180BPM (6kps). In Tap X alt Jumps, Each hand taps are 90 BPM But your aim hand has a APS so it will still feel like you're playing 180BPM and not 90BPM. But when doing Streams, both hands have to achieve a tapping speed of 180BPM . Thefore making it your cap speed with the playstyle.

There is also a point if you get so use to the playstyle you may finding yourself able to Aim 400BPM+ Jumps as both hands are only Achieveing 200BPM+ Single Taps. But you will more than likely be nearing your APS Cap before capping out on your tap Speed.

    Control

Because you are tapping with two hands individually, you will eventually find out your control with Tap X is mad. Quickly being able to switch between Doubles Triplets and even Quadruplets very rapidly.

    Flow Aim (Tech; Streams)

Because of the Nature of the playstyle keeping a steady flow is very difficulty.

Tap X Alt. Is basically switching between two playstyles rapidly. Having Snappy aim to having flow Aim, back-and-fourth between the two.

Everytime you tap it's generally (Not Always) at the pivot point of whatever direction you are going. (Also can look very much like a Shake as Doki says. Shaking in my opinion is when you get unstable.)

Spaced Streams or Long Streams are Difficult (Including Tech)

Spaced Streams is the same issues as Flow Aim (Read Flow Aim for the issue on Spaced Streams)

Long Streams, This is where Stability takes place. Although hitting Stacks may not seem that hard. The longer you hold a stream the more unstable you get. This is where Shaking becomes a problem. Because you are tapping, the rising and pressing of your pen is becomes amplified as you also shake. More than a regular K1 K2 player would streaming as only shaking takes place.

    Very Difficult to Learn**

This is not a playstyle you can just pick up and expect to learn immediately. It will take Practice before you can play this effectively. The playstyle is basically switching between Two at all times. Follow the Quote below.

Tip And Tricks to improving at Tap X Alt. :

The biggest thing I can say for any of these playstyles is "Start slow, learn control, don't mash." -Doki

Honestly the best Quote for players learning Tap X ♥

If you dont think you can play Tap X Alt.

I will tell you, you are wrong. Anyone can learn it. You can prove it to your self by preforming a drum roll with your hands and just moving your aim hand left-to-right, up-and-down. And Congratz! You've proved to yourself you can play Tap X Alt! It's a common misconception that you think you cant do it because you are thinking about it too much. But In a previous post about new players and Tap X Alt being the playstyle they started out osu! with it. It feels natural for them to play that way. (Absolutely Mind-Blowing Experiment)

The osu! Skin you use can help you!

If you have a osu! skin that alternates between two Colours Like Pink and Green. Your mind begins to focus on one that it taps to and the other colours it Presses K2 to. This can be also Very helpful for Streaming with the playstyle!

    Flicking (Advanced)

This will help improve your APS Cap. Flicking is like it sounds. When you go to Tap with your Pen you can build up tiny amounts of pressure to move another direction very quickly and return back. This is what can make a Pro Tap X Player Stand out more compared to someone who is new to the playstyle or is still in the learning process. With Flicking You can achieve absurdly high BPM Jumps For a Short amount of time.

    Tobe Style Pro and Cons:

    Pro Con
Consistent Aim / Snappy Aim ♦ Limited APS
♦ Bursts are easy ♦ Flow Aim
♦ Can play high BPMs ♦ Spaced Streams or Long Streams are Difficult (Including Tech)
    ♦ Control
    ♦ Very Easy to Learn!

    Consistent Aim / Snappy Aim

Tobe Style is probably the best for Jump consistency along with Tap Z X. Where you tap feels exactly like where you aim, and with each tap It marks a Pivot point.

    Bursts are easy

Because of the use of both your hands for Rhythm it can result in sudden bursts of Speed in quick rapid succession.

Can play high BPMs and Limited APS

Your Aim hand is generally going to be your dominate hand and is limited to your APS and your Tapping Speed. It is a physically stamina draining playstyle for that hand. The higher BPMs you go, it becomes exponentially more difficult to stay stable. I would not reccommend playing this on anything over 300BPM but it's still very much possible. Your hand doing 300BPM is not only trying to do a 10APS but also 10KPS and Majority of the worlds population cant even tap 10KPS. Which is what Makes Some of Doki's Plays absolutely amazing.

    Control

Because you are tapping with two hands individually, you will eventually find out your control with Tap X is mad. Quickly being able to switch between Doubles Triplets and even Quadruplets very rapidly.

    Very Easy to Learn!

Tobe Style is the most common varient of Tap X. Because it is the easiest to learn and play. Very user friendly.

    Flow Aim (Tech; Streams)

Because of the Nature of the playstyle keeping a steady flow is very difficulty.

Everytime you tap it's generally (Not Always) at the pivot point of whatever direction you are going. (Also can look very much like a Shake as Doki says. Shaking in my opinion is when you get unstable.)

Spaced Streams or Long Streams are Difficult

Spaced Streams is the same issues as Flow Aim (Read Flow Aim for the issue on Spaced Streams)

Long Streams, This is where Stability takes place. Although hitting Stacks may not seem that hard. The longer you hold a stream the more unstable you get. This is where Shaking becomes a problem. Because you are tapping, the rising and pressing of your pen is becomes amplified as you also shake. More than a regular K1 K2 player would streaming as only shaking takes place.

With Flicking You can achieve absurdly high BPM Jumps For a Short amount of time.

    • Flow Speed Jumps (Advanced)

If there are 3 Jumps in a straight row going above the standard speed you can achieve. Do not try to Tap all 3 Jumps. This will make you completely mess up and become unstable. And Being Stable is very important. Try and hit the 2nd Note with the K2 instead to avoid a bad situation.

    Reverse Tobe Pro and Cons:

    Pro Con
♦ Least Physically Demanding on Aim Hand ♦ Flow Aim (Tech; Streams)
♦ Bursts are easy ♦ Spaced Streams or Long Streams are Difficult (Including Tech)
♦ Can play high BPMs ♦ Limited KPS
    ♦ Control
    Easy to Learn!

Least Physically Demanding on Aim Hand

Due to the nature of Reverse Tobe, you K2 all your jumps! And will have the least amount of Tapping with your Aim Hand. Making it a good balance and use between both your hands.

    Bursts are easy

Because of the use of both your hands for Rhythm it can result in sudden bursts of Speed in quick rapid succession.

Can play high BPMs and Limited KPS

As you make use of both your hands, you are still limited to how fast you can single tap with your K2. Which gets harder the higher BPM you go. Which is why there is also Reverse Asuki, to remove the factor of Reverse Tobe's Limited KPS.

    Control

Because you are tapping with two hands individually, you will eventually find out your control with Tap X is mad. Quickly being able to switch between Doubles Triplets and even Quadruplets very rapidly.

    Easy to Learn! ***

Re verse Tobe Style is a uncommon varient of Tap X. It is still Easy to learn and play. User friendly.

    • Learn K1 K2 too!

Learning how to play K1 K2 is helpful for this playstyle and a few of the others. As it is not recommended to be doing Tech Maps using Tap X, as the flow of the map is constantly changing and Tapping may seem inconsistent or difficult to hit the notes.

    • Reverse Tobe Hyrbid/Reverse Azuki Hybrid

If things begin to get too fast for you to Keep Pressing K2 for your Jumps, it may be a good to a Reverse Tobe Hybrid to help increase your jump speeds consistency. Alternating between both K1 and K2 to hit Jumps more effectively.

Tap Z X Pro and Con:

    Pro Con
♦ Snappy Aim ♦ Medium difficulty to Learn
♦ Can play high BPMs ♦ Limited APS
    ♦ Very Consistent All around
    ♦ Flow Aim
♦ Spaced And long streams are The same as K1 K2 Players

First I have to say this. Tap Z X is probably the best playstyle out there for any user to be using. It's taking the best parts of Tap X Players and K1 K2 Players and combining them togethor. This is the only Variant of Tap X that has Flow Aim and can do Spaced Streams and Long Streams without having the same issues as all of the other Tap X Variants.

    Consistent Aim / Snappy Aim

Tap Z X is probably the best for Jump consistency along with Tobe Style. Where you tap feels exactly like where you aim, and with each tap It marks a Pivot point.

Can play High BPMs / Limited APS

The reason why this is high BPMs and Not Very High BPMs is the Pen Tap Factor. As Described above I will not be going into Hybrids of the playstyles. (Expect in Tips and Tricks)

Which is what Makes Some of Emilia's Plays absolutely amazing.

Flow Aim / Spaced And Long Streams

Because you are using K1 K2 for streaming, Flow feels very nice and easy. You do not get that Snap/Shakey Aim from the other Tap X Variants.

    Medium difficulty to Learn

The playstyle does call for Switching between Two. Hitting K1 K2 and Tap. But just with a little bit of practice it wont take very long to get use to. Or if you are already use to streaming K1 K2, This playstyle will not be very difficult to pick up.

Tips and tricks Tap Z X:

"Start slow, learn control, don't mash." -Doki

    Flicking (Advanced)

This will help improve your APS Cap. Flicking is like it sounds. When you go to Tap with your Pen you can build up tiny amounts of pressure to move another direction very quickly and return back. This is what can make a Pro Tap X Player Stand out more compared to someone who is new to the playstyle or is still in the learning process. With Flicking You can achieve absurdly high BPM Jumps For a Short amount of time.

    Reverse Azuki Pro and Con:

    Pro Con
♦ Bursts are easy ♦ Spaced Streams or Long Streams are Difficult (Including Tech)
Can play VERY high BPMs ♦ Flow Aim (Tech; Streams)
♦ Control ♦ Difficult to Learn*

Sorry I dont know much about this playstyle, other than it's taking the Hardest Things from K1 K2 and Tap X. And combining it togethor.

    Bursts are easy

Because of the use of both your hands for Rhythm it can result in sudden bursts of Speed in quick rapid succession.

    Can play VERY high BPMs

With Reverse Azuki, your speed is the highest BPM your weakest hand can single tap.

Ex: Say The fastest your weakest hand can tap is 270BPM (9KPS). Therefore your Max playable Speed will be 270BPM.

You are using K1 and K2 to hit Jumps. So Achieveing over 9KPS shouldn't be much of an issue.

Because you are tapping, the rising and pressing of your pen is becomes amplified to your shake. More than a regular K1 K2 player would streaming as only shaking takes place.

    Difficult to Learn*

Playing Reverse Azuki is not a medicore task. You are likely to make mistakes playing in higher difficulties. And the Playstyle can even cause problems itself if you don't play it correctly!

Because of how the Game works. You can not Press K1 and M1 at the same Time.

Ex: Pick an Easy Map, and Tap (M1) and Hold your first Note you hit. When you reach the second Note, hit it with K1 this time. And BAM! You missed or Slider Broke, because you are holding onto M1.

Where this can become an issue is on things like Tech maps where There is a Quadruplet and you ending with M1 your Tap. and next Note is a Jump, so you go to hit it with K1 Cause maybe it's your dominate Finger. End Result. a Miss because you havent lifted your Pen yet.

Now that's Probably not a common issue with the playstyle, but there are different ways It can happen and it does happen.

    Tips and Tricks Reverse Azuki:

"Start slow, learn control, don't mash." -Doki

(Tap [X Alt) Z] Pro and Con:

    Pro Con
♦ Flow Aim (Tech; Streams) ♦ 3 Different Playstyles In 1.
♦ Snappy Aim (Jumps) ♦ Lack of Control
♦ For Show EXTREMELY Difficult to Learn
♦ Spaced And long streams are The same as K1 K2 Players ***

    3 Different Playstyles In 1

So this I know is probably just going to be a for show for Tap X. But it's still cool to watch as a Player has the ability to not only Switch between Hovering and Dragging every other note, but to immediately stop and revert back to K1 K2 to stream.

The player must know how to play Tobe Style.

The Player Must know how to play with K1 K2.

The Player Must know how to integrate Tap with K2 (Tap X Alt)

Thus Making it 3-in-1, the hardest Tap X Variant.

    Lack of Control

To the other Tap X Playstyles, the the ones that use K1 K2 to stream lack control Tap X has. As they are now putting it all on one hands instead of Two hands.

    ***EXTREMELY Difficult to Learn***

As I said above this is 3-in-1 playstyle. The difficulty is no-joke. It's almost esstiantial you learn how to play osu! Twice before you can start playing with this. Meaning if you started out as a K1 K2 player, you're not going to know how to play Tap X Alt. To Learn Tap X alt from a K1 K2 to player, you have to start from square one again. And Vice versa.

It Also suffers from the same issue that Reverse Azuki does.

Where this can become an issue is on things like Tech maps where There is a Quadruplet and you ending with K1, and next Note is a Jump, so you go to hit it with M1 (Tap). End Result. A Miss.

Flow Aim (Tech; Streams) / Spaced And Long Streams

Because you are using K1 K2 for streaming, Flow feels very nice and easy. You do not get that Snap/Shakey Aim from the other Tap X Variants while streaming.

    For Show

This is a fun playstyle to show off with because of it's difficulty. You're not using 2 buttons like any standard playstyle but 3! Constantly Alternating never hitting the same button twice in a row. Your Jumps look very clean and Snappy, while also still have a Nice Flow to streams.

Tips and Tricks (Tap [X Alt) Z]:

"Start slow, learn control, don't mash." -Doki

    Flicking (Advanced)

This will help improve your APS Cap. Flicking is like it sounds. When you go to Tap with your Pen you can build up tiny amounts of pressure to move another direction very quickly and return back. This is what can make a Pro Tap X Player Stand out more compared to someone who is new to the playstyle or is still in the learning process. With Flicking You can achieve absurdly high BPM Jumps For a Short amount of time.

6 years ago, hvick225 got number one on the map called "Bokura, Kakeyuku Sora e (Movie EDIT)" on the insane diff using hidden, double time, and hardrock, with the map being ar8 nomod, this was one of, if not, the first ever ar11 FC.

Which players do you think are underrated?

    Posted: 03 Jan 2020 08:29 AM PST

Not sure if i phrased it right but im sure that there are plenty of very skilled players that only arent high up in the ranks bc they dont farm/play less/etc. I barely know players outside the top 100 so would anyone enlighten me with some knowledge?
